Court lifts tribe's injunction against Detroit casinos

The 8th Circuit Court of Appeals on Thursday cleared the way for the construction of three permanent casinos in Detroit.

The appeals court lifted an injunction the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians had won against the three casinos owners. The tribe successfully argued that its constitutional rights were violated when it was excluded from bidding on the casino licenses.

The tribe eventually secured a $79 million settlement with two of the casino companies involved, which the court approved yesterday. The court, however, dismissed the tribe's lawsuit against the third casino company.
