Washington governor rejects Spokane compact

Negotiations between the Spokane Tribe and the state of Washington will continue now that Gov. Christine Gregoire (D) has rejected a proposed compact.

Gregoire said she welcomed the tribe's willingness to share its gaming revenues. The tribe proposed to share as much as 35 percent with state and local governments.

But the revenue sharing was tied to a controversial off-reservation casino that Gregoire is not ready to accept. A spokesperson said she isn't entirely opposed to off-reservation gaming but wants more work done on the compact.

Gregoire also expressed concerns about the tribe's request for 7,500 slot machines and how the tribe would obtain them.
