Washington tribes asked to ban smoking at casinos

Tribal leaders in Washington are considering a request made by Gov. Christine Gregoire (D) to ban smoking at their casinos but some aren't excited about the idea.

The new casino owned by the Tulalip Tribes already has an elaborate ventilation system to ensure the air is clean, said chairman Stan Jones Sr. He doesn't think a smoking ban is necessary.

The Stillaguamish Tribe hasn't made a decision although it was presented to the council, said chairman Shawn Yanity. He said the casino also has a special ventilation system.

The Puyallup Tribe doesn't plan to take up the issue, said spokesman John Weymer. He said the casino has non-smoking areas.

The state's smoking ban, considered to be one of the most strict in the nation, went into effect last week. It applies to all public places.
