Turtle Mountain Band moves forward with casino

The Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians made a progress report on its plans for an off-reservation casino in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

The tribe has hired two architectural firms, a local advertising firm and several law firms, and has opened an office in Grand Forks. Financial forecasts and economic impact reports are being prepared, and other amenities, such as a hotel and convention center, are being discussed.

The Grand Forks city council has supported the efforts but has not endorsed the casino. Council members say a vote before the people will probably be called.

Other tribes in the state, who operate casinos on their reservations, are opposing the idea. The Turtle Mountain Band has a casino on its reservation.
