Gaming an issue in Wisconsin gubernatorial race

A Republican U.S. Congressman who is seeking the GOP nomination for governor of Wisconsin is proposing to making Indian gaming a part of his campaign platform.

Rep. Mark Green says measures are needed to restrict the influence of tribal gaming in state politics. He is proposing to renegotiate all gaming compacts, bar campaign contributions from entities involved in off-reservation gaming and require state legislative approval of off-reservation casinos.

Tribal leaders criticized the proposals. Ken Walsh, a spokesman for the Forest County Potawatomi Tribe, and Michael Chapman, the chairman of the Menominee Nation, said Green is picking on tribes for political gain.
