Masked intruder and man who shot him worked for tribe

A masked intruder and the man who shot and killed him once worked for the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians. Police said their working relationship led to the fatal incident.

David Edward Ferguson, 48, was killed last Monday by Lou Phillips, 69 after Ferguson apparently attacked Phillips' wife and entered the couple's home in Healdsburg. Police said the shooting was justified.

Six years ago, Ferguson used to be the chief financial officer for the Viejas casino while Phillips was chief executive officer. They clashed on the job and Ferguson harbored bad feelings against Phillips, police said. Phillips said he fired Ferguson.

Ferguson was also a former student of Phillips when Phillips taught gaming management at the University of Nevada at Reno.
