Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle (D) plans to veto a bill that would require state lawmakers to concur with off-reservation gaming proposals.
Under Section 20 of the
Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, the state governor has the power to approve or reject an off-reservation casino. The process is known as a two-part determination.
Doyle said the state bill conflicts with IGRA. But the
Forest County Potawatomi Tribe, which operates an off-reservation casino in Milwaukee, is urging him to reconsider his stance in a new radio ad.
The Potawatomis oppose an off-reservation casino sought by the
Menominee Nation. The Menominees want to convert an old dog track into a Class III facility.
