A ballot measure in Barstow, California, that would have established a district for one off-reservation casino proposal but would have denied plans for two other off-reservation casinos was rejected by voters on Tuesday.

Measure H would have created a casino district for the Chemehuevi Tribe along Interstate 15. It would have left out side-by-side casinos sought by the Big Lagoon Rancheria and the Los Coyotes Band of Band of Cahuilla and Cupeno Indians.

The Chemehuevis lack a compact with the state but have ancestral ties to the area. Big Lagoon and Los Coyotes have signed a compact but are each based hundreds of miles from Barstow, which sits about halfway between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
