Schwarzenegger renews talks with some tribes

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) has renewed compact negotiations with a handful of tribes who resisted his first offer two years ago.

According to Copley News Service, the Pechanga Band, the Morongo Band, the San Manuel Band, the Agua Caliente Band and the Sycuan Band are among those who are considering new deals. Talks began a few weeks ago but nothing concrete has developed so far.

The tribes operate some of the most lucrative casinos in the state. They rejected Schwarzenegger's first offer, saying it would infringe on their sovereignty.

Schwarzenegger's views on those issues hasn't changed, according to his administration. But his former chief compact negotiator, who has a rocky history with tribes, will no longer be working for the governor.
