The California Assembly voted down a lucrative gaming compact between the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R).
The 33-27 vote was 8 votes short need to ratify the compact. According to Copley News Service, most Republicans supported the deal while most Democrats opposed it or abstained due to the lack of labor union provisions.
Meanwhile, the Schwarzenegger administration is said to have reached new deals with the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians and the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians. Each tribe would be able to operate up to 7,500 slot machines in exchange for a share of revenues.
