Off-reservation casinos face many obstacles

Off-reservation casinos are facing more scrutiny in the wake of Jack Abramoff, according to some Indian law experts.

Eric Eberhard, a lawyer with Dorsey and Whitney, said the Bush administration isn't likely to approve any off-reservation casinos due to controversy over Abramoff. Bruce Greene, a lawyer based in Colorado, agreed.

"I don�t think the climate is going to support any expanded gaming efforts by tribes," Greene told the Associated Press.

Meanwhile, members of Congress are considering bills that would restrict off-reservation gaming. Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona), the chairman of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, hopes to mark up his amendments to the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act soon.
