Catawba gaming case headed to state Supreme Court

The South Carolina Supreme Court agreed on Wednesday to hear the Catawba Nation's gaming dispute with the state.

A lower court judge ruled that the tribe can offer video poker on the reservation even though the game has been banned elsewhere in the state. The judge relied on a special act of Congress that placed the tribe's gaming enterprise under state jurisdiction [Indianz.Com: Settlement act proves helpful for Catawba Nation].

The tribe has said it will drop plans to offer video poker if a new high-stakes bingo hall off the reservation is authorized by the state. The legislation for the bingo hall is pending.
