Cherokee Nation wants racino site placed in trust

The Cherokee Nation is filing a land-into-trust application for its casino racetrack in Claremore, Oklahoma.

The tribe bought the 280-acre Will Rogers Downs and installed electronic machines there. Regulation of the facility currently falls under state law even through it is tribal owned.

If the facility is placed in trust, regulation will change, a state racing commission official said. The tribe will have to negotiate a Class III compact for horse racing, the official said.
