Miss Choctaws push off-reservation casino

The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians is stepping up its plan to build a casino more than 200 miles from its reservation.

Chief Phillip Martin placed a full-page ad in the Biloxi newspaper to tout the casino. He said the tribe can't pay taxes but can share revenues with the local community.

Leaders in Ocean Springs and Jackson County are willing to talk about the proposal. But they say it's up to the tribe to sell the idea.

The tribe operates a printing plant in Ocean Springs near Interstate 10. The tribe owns an additional 100 acres near the highway that would be used for the casino.
