Ruling in Wisconsin tribal gaming expected

The Wisconsin Supreme Court is expected to issue a ruling on the legality of tribal gaming.

The owners of an ailing racetrack sued the state in 2001. They argue that tribes shouldn't be allowed to offer lucrative forms of Class III gaming.

It's not likely that the court will go as far as to restrict gaming but the case has put a hold on some tribal plans to expand their casinos. Along with another court challenge, it has forced Gov. Jim Doyle (D) to negotiate new compacts with tribes.

Doyle's first compact was thrown out of court after Republicans said it gave the tribes too much without paying enough to the state.
