Los Coyotes Band sees support as fast continues

Supporters of the Los Coyotes Band of Cahuilla and Cupeńo Indians are joining a fast on the state Capitol in Sacramento.

Two state lawmakers, environmentalists and labor groups say the tribe's deal for an off-reservation casino should be approved. Tribal members have been fasting for more than a week to protest inaction on their compact.

Catherine Siva Saubel, the chairwoman of the tribe, said she is frustrated by the delays. She says lawmakers are influenced by wealthy tribes who already have casinos.

"They call themselves Indians. I call them greedy," she told The Sacramento Bee.

Tribal members will continue to fast until the legislative session ends on August 31.
