Group forms to fight Mississippi Choctaw casino

A new group called Coast Businesses for Fair Play has been formed to fight the off-reservation casino sought by the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians.

The group says the Bureau of Indian Affairs failed to notify the public about a hearing on the casino proposal. A notice was published in the Federal Register last week.

The tribe wants to open a casino more than 200 miles from the reservation. The site is located off a major interstate.

Local and state officials are already opposing the project. Under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, the tribe needs the approval of the BIA and the concurrence of the state governor before moving forward.
