Four tribes seeks casinos in southern New Mexico

$stalker Only one tribe is currently based in southern New Mexico but four others -- including two from other states -- are looking to make a home there.

The Tigua Tribe of Texas, the Fort Sill Apache Tribe of Oklahoma, Picuris Pueblo of New Mexico and Jemez Pueblo of New Mexico are eyeing casinos in southern New Mexico. They are in various stages of the federal review process for acquiring land for gaming purposes.

The area is home to the Mescalero Apache Nation, which operates a casino, and a non-Indian racetrack. But supporters believe there is demand for more gaming.

Gov. Bill Richardson (D) hasn't said how he feels about off-reservation gaming. But he's "concerned there's already too much gaming in New Mexico," a spokesperson said.
