Pechanga Band seeks more slots, second casino

After running into problems last year, the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians enlisted a Democratic lawmaker to sponsor the tribe's gaming compact bill in the California Senate.

Under the compact, the tribe would be able to operate up to 7,500 slot machines and open a second casino on its reservation. In exchange, the tribe would share $42.5 million with the state every year.

The tribe signed the deal with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) last year. But Democrats, acting on behalf of labor unions, blocked the compacts.

The Pechanga Band and other tribes have since reached out to Democrats to sponsor their compact bills.
