California tribes await vote on new compacts
Monday, April 16, 2007

politics
Six California tribes are expected to face a tough audience when their compacts go before the state Assembly.

The state Senate held hearings last week on the agreements. With Democrats as sponsors the compact bills are expected to gain approval.

The Assembly is another story. Speaker Fabian Núñez, a Democrat, said the deals won't be approved as they are written.

The compacts allow five of the most successful tribes to add up to 22,500 slot machines to their casinos. A sixth tribe, the Yurok Tribe, would open its first casino.

In exchange, the tribes would share slot machine revenues with the state, an estimated take of $500 million a year.
