New York county to take up casino legislation
Wednesday, May 9, 2007

catskills
Lawmakers in Ulster County, New York, are expected to vote on legislation to require local approval of any tribal casinos.

A state law passed in the wake of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks authorizes up to three tribal casinos in Ulster and Sullivan counties. The law doesn't require local approval.

Ulster County leaders want a say in any development. Several communities have passed resolutions opposing gaming.

Right now, the state has only approved one casino, for the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe, in Sullivan County. Other tribes have expressed an interest in the two counties.
