Mississippi governor opposes new casinos

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour (R) said he opposes the expansion of gaming in the state.

Barbour spoke at the Southern Gaming Summit on Thursday. He praised the state's gaming industry for improving the economy.

But he said he doesn't want any more gaming. "After 15 years I think it's time to close the window," he said, The Biloxi Sun-Herald reported.

Barbour didn't specifically address the off-reservation casino sought by the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. The tribe says it won't proceed without support among voters in Jackson County.

The county scheduled a non-binding referendum this year to ask voters about the casino. If the tribe moves forward, Barbour -- or whoever is the state governor at the time -- has final say.
