Town prepares for huge vote on Mashpee casino

Officials in Middleboro, Massachusetts, are busy preparing what will be one of the largest meetings in town history.

On Saturday, town residents will vote on a casino agreement with the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe. More than half of the 14,600 registered voters are expected to attend the meeting.

The tribe is offering up to $11 million a year plus $250 million in infrastructure improvements. The tribe wants to build a casino on land it purchased in the town.

Even if the 43-page agreement [PDF] is approved, the tribe has to negotiate a Class III compact with the state and have its land placed in trust.
