Florida lawmakers want approval over compacts

The Florida Senate Regulated Industries Committee approved a bill on Tuesday to require legislative approval of tribal gaming compacts.

The Seminole Tribe and the Miccosukee Tribe are in talks with Gov. Charlie Crist (R) to bring slot machines to their casinos. State voters legalized the machines, clearing the way for tribes to operate them.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs was set to approve Class III rules for the tribes but Crist asked for time to negotiate. Sen. Steve Geller, a Democrat, said lawmakers should play a role in the process.
