Michigan tribe faces wait for off-reservation casino

The Hannahville Tribe of Potawatomi Indians wants to build an off-reservation casino in Romulus, Michigan, but it could take years to gain federal approval.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs published notice earlier this month of its intent to prepare an environmental impact statement for the $250 million casino on 24 acres. The process could take up to five years to complete, an n environmental protection specialist with the agency said.

The February 14 notice says the casino site is "over 450 miles from the tribe's reservation." The project would need the state governor's approval.
