Navajo Nation Council debates overrides on gaming

The Navajo Nation Council is meeting today to consider overriding vetoes by President Joe Shirley Jr.

The council passed legislation to create gaming enterprises for two chapters. Shirley vetoed the bills, saying the tribe should only have one central gaming unit.

The council has already overridden one of Shirley's vetoes on a gaming enterprise for the Tse' Daa' Kaan Chapter in New Mexico. Delegates are likely to do the same for the Shiprock and To'Hajiilee Chapters, The Farmington Daily Times reported.

The tribe hopes to open up to six casinos in New Mexico and Arizona.
