Mohegan Tribe spends $13M to renovate hotel

The Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut is spending more than $13 million to renovate the hotel at the Mohegan Sun casino.

The hotel remains open while the renovation takes place. To limit disruptions, work only takes place Sunday through Friday in order to keep all 1,176 rooms available during the busy weekend.

That means contractors and hotel employees have to work quickly as they go floor by floor. Each week, another 45 rooms are redone with new furniture, fixtures and other items.

The hotel has a 94 percent occupancy rate, far above the national average of 63 percent. The tribe will be adding 1,000 more rooms as part of a $740 million expansion.

The work comes amid major growth of gaming in New England. New casinos are on the way in New York and Pennsylvania, and gaming could be legalized in Massachusetts.
