Florida governor talks gaming with Kempthorne

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist (R) discussed gaming issues with Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday.

Crist talked about the Seminole Tribe's proposal to operate slot machines, which have been legalized in the state. The tribe wants to negotiate a Class III compact and potentially share revenues.

Crist has said he is open to a deal with the tribe. He plans to meet with the Seminoles as soon as this week.

The tribe tried to negotiate a compact with former governor Jeb Bush (R), the brother of President Bush, but talks failed. That prompted the Interior Department to step in and say it was willing to issue Class III rules for the tribe.

After taking office, Crist asked Interior to hold off in order to negotiate with the Seminoles. The Miccosukee Tribe also wants a compact.
