California compact backers got tribal donations

California Democrats who are sponsoring gaming compact bills have received an influx of tribal campaign contributions, the Associated Press reports.

During last year's election, the tribes with new compacts donated $540,000 to help two Democrats. The lawmakers are now sponsoring bills to ratify the agreements.

The tribes with new compacts also gave more than $900,000 to support a top Democratic lawmaker who is supporting the agreements.

The compacts would allow the tribes to offer more slot machines and expand their operations in exchange for a share of the revenues.
