Passamaquoddy Tribe to campaign for racino

The Passamaquoddy Tribe of Maine will spend the summer trying to convince voters to authorize another racino.

The racino was approved by the state Legislature but Gov. John Baldacci (D) vetoed it. That means voters get the final say on the proposal.

The tribe wants to build a racetrack with as many at 1,500 slot machines. A similar non-Indian facility, also approved by voters, is already in operation.

The tribe argues it should get the racino out of fairness. In 2003, voters rejected a tribal casino.
