First Nations casinos pull in $40M in profit

The four Native casinos in Saskatchewan reported $40 million in profits for fiscal year 2005-2006.

The four casinos, overseen by the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority, are required to contribute 37.5 percent of profits to the First Nations Trust Fund and 37.5 percent to the province. The remaining 25 percent goes to the four First Nations that run the casinos.

The trust fund is distributed to 75 First Nations throughout the province. Each receives a base amount, plus more money based on the size of the band membership. The First Nations can use the money on 12 broad areas, including senior and youth programs, education, health and governance.

Two more Native casinos are slated to open by the end of the year.
