Ho-Chunk Nation wanted off-reservation casino deal

The Ho-Chunk Nation wanted a stake in an off-reservation casino sought by two other Wisconsin tribes, The Beloit Daily News reports.

The Ho-Chunks approached the St. Croix and Bad River bands of Chippewa last December to become a partner in the Beloit casino. The Ho-Chunks offered to pay a third of the project and to help win federal approval.

Chippewa leaders considered the deal but a spokesperson for the project said the Ho-Chunks would haven't brought anything to the table. A couple of weeks later, the regional Bureau of Indian Affairs office approved the project and discussion ended.

The Ho-Chunks then started running an ad campaign against the casino, accusing the Chippewas of having no ties to the Beloit area.
