Still waiting for DOI decision on Catskills casino

New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer (D) plans to call Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne this week to talk about an off-reservation casino in the Catskills.

Spitzer agreed to the casino for the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe. But Kempthorne opposes off-reservation gaming and could block the tribe from acquiring the land for the project.

A Bureau of Indian Affairs spokesperson said the paperwork is currently before associate deputy secretary Jim Cason. It's not clear when he will make a recommendation to Kempthorne.
