Labor unions to rally against California compacts

The California Labor Federation, AFL-CIO, is holding a rally at the state Capitol today to oppose new tribal gaming compacts.

Labor unions oppose the deals, saying they don't protect workers. Their concerns have blocked the state Legislature from approving the compacts for five wealthy tribes and another tribe that wants to start gaming.

Democrats in the Assembly are trying to resolve the issues between labor and tribes. An effort is being made to draw up separate agreements, in addition to the compacts, that would be ratified by the Legislature.
