Pokagon Band set to open casino August 2

The Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians plans to open its Four Winds Casino Resort on August 2.

Construction crews are working seven days a week in order to meet the grand opening date. When it is finished, the casino in New Buffalo Township will employ 2,500 people.

The Michigan tribe was recognized by an act of Congress in 1994 and sought to have land placed in trust for an initial reservation. After a lawsuit from gaming opponents, the Bureau of Indian Affairs finally acquired the land in January.

Two other Michigan tribes are also waiting for approval to acquire land and build casinos.
