Union wants NLRB probe at Mashantucket casino

The United Auto Workers union has asked the National Labor Relations Board to investigate the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation for alleged violations of federal labor law.

UAW, one of the largest unions, has been trying to organize at the Foxwoods Resort Casino. But organizers claim they have been harassed and that Pequot Chairman Michael J. Thomas threatened to fire employees who are supporting the union.

In May 2004, the NLRB overturned 30 years of precedent and said tribes can be subject to federal labor law if their businesses employ or impact non-Indians. Most of the 20,000 employees at Foxwoods are non-Indian.
