Rep. Courtney backs labor bid at tribal casino

Rep. Joe Courtney (D-Connecticut) supports a labor union's effort to organize at the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation's casino.

Courtney, a first-term Congressman, met with the United Auto Workers to hear their concerns. A statement released by his office cited a recent federal appeals court decision that said tribes can be subject to federal labor law.

“This right has been recognized by federal courts, a decision which I strongly support and which I conveyed to the meeting participants,” Courtney said in the statement given to The New London Day.

The UAW has accused tribal officials and executives of harassment. The president of Foxwoods Resort Casino has said the union is bothering workers at home and at the casino.

The National Labor Relations Board has started an investigation into the union's complaints.
