California bill forces tribes to wait for casinos

A California lawmaker has introduced a bill to force newly recognized tribes to wait 25 years before pursing a casino.

Rep. John Campbell, a Republican, says he wants to make sure tribes who seek recognition are doing so for cultural reasons. He represents a district in Orange County where a casino has been proposed by an unrecognized tribe.

A different unrecognized tribe, the Juaneno Band of Mission Indians, has petitioned the Bureau of Indian Affairs for recognition. A decision is expected by November 26.
