Los Coyotes Band drops gaming partner

The Los Coyotes Band of Cahullia and Cupeno Indians has apparently dropped its gaming partner but will continue to pursue an off-reservation casino.

The tribe partnered with a developer called BarWest for a casino in Barstow. The Big Lagoon Rancheria was also part of the deal.

But internal memos released to the media have Los Coyotes Chairman Katherine Siva Saubel calling off the partnership with BarWest. The tribe, however, wants to buy the 47-acre site in Barstow from BarWest.

The two tribes signed compacts with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) for side-by-side casinos. Democrats and other tribes with casinos derailed the agreements in the state Legislature.
