Agua Caliente Band sues over compact referendum

The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians has sued California's Secretary of State over a pending referendum on four tribal gaming compacts.

The tribe wants to block the state from certifying the referendum, which is scheduled for February 2008. The tribe says the compacts can't be put to a public vote because they are not "legislative acts."

Two other tribes have already sued the state the block the referendum. The Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians and the Morongo Band of Mission Indians say opponents of the compacts missed a deadline for signature-gathering.

Along with the Sycuan Band of Kumeyaay Indians, the four tribes signed compacts to install more slot machines in exchange for sharing revenues with the state.
