John O’Brien, the president of the casino owned by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut, resigned on Friday to "pursue other interests," according to a statement.

O’Brien assumed control of the Foxwoods Resort Casino amid a $700 million expansion of the facility. The project, a collaboration with MGM Mirage, opens in May.

No further details were given about O’Brien's resignation, which is effective on January 18. But Foxwoods has seen a decline in slot machine revenues in recent months and faced a successful and unprecedented labor union campaign.

Barry J. Cregan, Fowoods' senior vice president of operations, will serve as interim president until the tribe can find a replacement.
