Oklahoma governor opposes Shawnee casino

Oklahoma Gov. Brad Henry (D) has joined opposition to the casino sought by the Shawnee Tribe.

Henry sent a letter to Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne on Friday. It said the tribe's proposed casino would hurt the nearby Remington Park racetrack.

"he Shawnee Tribe's proposal would undoubtedly have a deleterious effect on Remington Park's business, subsequently resulting in a significant loss of state revenue and critical funding for education," the letter stated, according to The Oklahoman.

The gaming site is 1.7 miles from the racetrack. The Bureau of Indian Affairs is reviewing the tribe's land-into-trust application.

The tribe was recognized by an act of Congress in 2000.
