Washington attorney general Rob McKenna defended the negotiation of Class III gaming compacts that have been criticized by Republicans.

McKenna, a Republican, spoke at the 8th annual Northwest Indian Gaming Conference and Expo earlier this month. He said the compacts negotiated by Gov. Chris Gregoire did not violate state or federal law.

"It was conducted strictly in the framework of state and federal law and it produced a compact which was adopted strictly within the requirements of the framework of state and federal law," McKenna said, The The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported. "Period."

Republicans called for a probe of the compacts because tribes have donated more than $650,000 to Gregoire and the state Democratic party. Democrats, who control the Legislature, rejected the request
