Big Sandy Rancheria casino expansion stirs debate

The Big Sandy Rancheria Band of Western Mono Indians is planning to expand its small casino but not everyone is happy with the work.

The tribe operates the Mono Wind Casino on its reservation. Exploratory work has begun to build a bigger facility on a 40-acre site that Fremont County says it not eligible for gaming.

The gaming site happens to be adjacent to the Table Mountain Rancheria. The Table Mountain Tribe operates a casino less than a mile away.

The cultural resources director for the Table Mountain Tribe and professors said the exploratory work has damaged archaeological sites.
