The Ponca Tribe of Nebraska will hold a meeting on January 26 to discuss a casino in Iowa.
The tribe won a ruling from the National Indian Gaming Commission over the status of trust land in Carter Lake. The NIGC, however, had strong words for the tribe, whose leaders had promised not to use the site for gaming.
"Without a consequence for those who boldly promise whatever suits them, we are concerned by the tarnish the Ponca's actions may have on the credibility and good faith of other tribes that attempt to have land taken into trust," the NIGC said on December 31, 2007.
The tribe was restored to federal recognition in 1990. Congress defined the tribe's service area to include parts of Nebraska, South Dakota and Iowa.
