Class II at issue at Prairie Band casino in Illinois

Opponents of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation's proposed casino in Illinois are questioning the types of games the Kansas-based tribe will be offering.

The tribe plans to open a 24-hour Class II facility on 128 acres of ancestral land. The National Indian Gaming Commission is trying to determine whether the parcel, which was acquired after 1988, can be used for a casino.

County officials voted to approve an agreement with the tribe for a cut of the revenues. But a group called the DeKalb County Taxpayers Against the Casino says the casino will be running bingo games that are virtually indistinguishable from slot machines.

The NIGC has proposed regulations that would classify some Class II games as Class III games. Tribes oppose the changes, saying they would hurt the industry.
