Penobscot Nation to move ahead with slot facility

The Penobscot Nation plans to move ahead with a slot machine facility on its reservation and sever ties with the state.

The tribe is upset that Gov. John Baldacci (D) has repeatedly vetoed gaming bills. He opposes the expansion of gaming in the state but In the past, he said he supported economic development in Indian Country.

The latest setback came over a proposed facility with 100 slot machines. Chief Kirk Francis said the tribe will cut all ties to the state in order to strike out on its own.
