Editorial: Thank Saginaw Chippewa for casino

"We've talked about the tourists, the traffic and the economic activity that the new Saganing Eagles Landing Casino near Standish has generated.

Now, the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe is showing us the money.

Late last month, the Tribal Council announced the 19 recipients of the first $378,500 in grants to come from the casino in lieu of taxes. In an agreement with the state of Michigan, the tribe pays 2 percent of its net slot machine proceeds to local governments and groups.

It's a bonanza for the Arenac County and northern Bay County governments and schools most affected by the casino and its customers.

And, as tribal public relations manager Frank Cloutier made very clear, it's just the beginning."
