NIGC subpoenas Fort Sill Apache Tribe

The National Indian Gaming Commission issued a subpoena to the Fort Sill Apache Tribe of Oklahoma over gaming-related activities on the tribe's trust land in New Mexico.

A July 15 letter requests information about a poker tournament the tribe held at the Apache Homelands Casino in southern New Mexico. The facility's legality is being questioned by NIGC.

Chairman Jeff Houser responded to the subpoena and noted that the tribe offered to share information about the tournament before it took place. But now that the state of New Mexico is interfering with activities on trust land, he said the tribe wants assurances that its employees will be protected from prosecution and that the information won't be passed on to the state.
