California churches to urge boycott of casinos

Catholic churches and charities say they are ready to boycott tribal casinos over a gaming dispute.

The churches and charities want to be able to offer a new form of paper bingo. Tribes say the game would turn nonprofit operations into commercial casinos.

A bill pending in the state Legislature would authorize the bingo game. The churches and charities say tribes are undermining the proposal.

Separately, the state has tried to bar churches and charities from operating certain electronic gaming machines. A federal judge has granted an injunction against the state.
